Information

For soap-making, the most commonly used types of olive oil are :

  • Lampante olive oil
This top-quality olive oil, mechanically extracted from fresh olives without chemicals, is prized in artisan soap-making for its moisturizing properties and skin-friendliness. After harvesting, the olives are crushed to form a paste, which is then pressed to extract the oil. Finally, the oil is separated from the water and paste solids by decantation or centrifugation. This process preserves the aromas, flavors and nutritional benefits of olive oil.

  • Pomace olive oil
Pomace olive oil is extracted from the solid residue of olives after the first cold extraction, using chemical solvents and heating processes. Mainly used in soap-making for its affordability, it produces a mild soap but may offer fewer skin benefits than virgin olive oil.

Tips :

  • If you want to make a Castile soap, i.e. a 100% Olive soap, your soap will not be very foamy, but extremely creamy! As for the mousse, it will be fine and light. This soap will leave your skin feeling incredibly moisturized, so you won't need your skincare cream after your shower... Another great money-saver! (Link to Blog article: Castile soap)
  • This soap is also recommended for babies and children for its moisturizing properties (link to "benefits and properties/ If possible!").
  • For my part, when I make this soap, I only add a few drops of Lavender essential oil. The sweet scent of olives mixed with Lavender is simply wonderful, and reminds me of my vacations in the land of cicadas!
  • This Castille will need to "dry" for at least 6 months to reveal all its properties.

Additions
:

  • By adding 3% sodium lactate to the total weight of the oils, you improve the soap's hardness and longevity, guaranteeing better hold and a softer feel on the skin. (Link to "Sodium Lactate" product datasheet)
  • When you add your clays, mix them first with your olive oil and blend for a few moments. This will ensure perfect dissolution of the clay and avoid lumps in your soap paste. Then add the soda and blend. (Link to category ADDED).
  • Olive oil can make up from 10% to 100% of your recipe, with over 60% adding hardness to your soap.

The trace
:

  • For a 100% Olive soap, it will take a long time to form a trace, so don't be afraid to blend for at least 5 minutes. The trace will be fine and your soap paste will be very clear.
  • The higher the percentage of olive oil, the slower the trace.
  • Caution: Obtaining the trace can vary from slow to fast, depending on the oils used in your recipe. For example, up to 15% castor oil is a natural trace gas pedal. (Ricin oil link)

Mussels
:

  • Be aware that the reaction between soda and oils can generate heat. Use our special molds and monitor the temperature throughout the process to avoid freezing your soaps.
  • Our molds are flexible, making them easy to remove from the mold once the soap has hardened. What's more, they enable better heat distribution during the saponification process, promoting optimal soap setting.
  • Castille is easy to cut into loaves and easy to unmold when used in individual molds. (Link to product sheet: Soap Cutter) (Link to mold category).
  • Demolding can be difficult even after saponification (24 to 48 hours). Don't hesitate to put your mold in the freezer (maximum 1 hour) to make it easier to remove the soap or bread from the mold.
